Endenese headmanís ring
~Sold to France~ $320.USD/$2400.HKD

Fine and rare manís ring from Ende, Flores, Nusa Tenggara (Lesser Sundas) Indonesia. I bought this in 1988 on a trip to study and buy some of their ikat weavings of which Flores is famous for (except for their recently discovered Hobbit fossils). The story on this is, it was dug up while putting in foundation poles for a village headmanís house, I see no reason to disbelieve this. At that time there were few foreigners traveling there so there wasnít any sort of tourist market. This is made from a gold and copper alloy and in my opinion is a Javanese Majapahit trade item, circa 13 CE -15 CE as the face has distinct Hindu or Buddhist characteristics such as exaggerated ears, a crown and elaborate unisha, possibly the face of Avalokitisvara as well as being a bit too sophisticated in terms of metalwork I saw there. My opinion aside I will guarantee this to be at least a 100 years old and authentic tribal item. I know nothing about ring sizes but the interior diameter is 19mm.
