Rawang men s blanket

Rare three paneled men’s wrap from the Nung/Rawang ethnic group of the Kachin State, Burma. The weaving technique and materials are quite unique which I have not encountered with any other ethnic group. The base warp and weft foundation is made from hemp fiber, the pile is made from cotton, and the finished maroon colored ends are finished in wool. All the fibers on this piece are handspun with the exception of the bright colored yarn which are “store bought” synthetics. The Rawang are a highland people who live in very remote areas of Northern Burma, and Yunnan China, although there are a few Christianized communities in Northern Thailand who arrived in the past generation or two as part of the greater Diaspora of many of Burma’s ethnic minorities. Due to the presence of the synthetic fibers, this piece is probably not more than 30 or 40 years old. I have seen the odd piece over the years traveling in Asia but recently I have seen a number of pieces appear from sources in Mae Sai and Chiang Mai, Thailand as well in one of the high end shop in shops in Bangkok (that are selling for about twice of what I am asking). Usually when I see a trend like this it means that a couple of entrepreneurial “runners” have bought all the available pieces and in another year or so these will be very hard to come by, since the availability of cheap Chinese replacement goods will make the hand made crafting of such pieces not a viable economic option. This piece has been gently washed (mainly to get the smell out) and would make nice carpet as well as a wall hanging. Excellent condition. L: 2m/78in and W: 1.04m/41in. I have a few more of these (of course I chose the best) some older, nicer and vice versa.
