| Unique red and black lacquer food container from Cambodia with copper tipped finial and carved floral embellishment at the top of the lid. This piece seems to have genuine wear and a couple small restorations but I would not date it much older than 40 years, bear in mind that during the Khmer Rouge reign (1975-1979) no arts and crafts were made. The listing as a wedding container is just what the vendor in Phnom Penh said it was, but the similarities to the Burmese hsun-ok (used as food receptacle during Buddhist ceremonies) are obvious but the only Khmer lacquerwares with religious connotations I have seen, have been finely made alms bowls. Traditional lacquer making has died out in Cambodia although fine pieces are still being made almost exclusively for the tourist and export to Thailand market, as the average Cambodian cannot afford them for daily use items so they are no longer being made. This piece is constructed of wood with carved bamboo strips on the base and lid. H: 29cm/11in and D: 22cm/8.6in. | |||||||||
