Superb Antique Japanese Satsuma Dish - Meiji Period
Gorgeous Satsuma dish with outstanding hand painted decoration featuring superb depictions of wise sages, bodhisattvas, rakans, and temple children, all wearing highly detailed brocaded kimonos. Two exquisite golden dragons encircle the rim with hundreds of minute raised scales, sharp talons, long whiskers, and flaming limbs. Very energetic with a lively sense of motion. The intricate imagery and attention to detail is nothing short of spectacular, with a dazzling array haloed figures set amongst a beautiful landscape, and shading rendered by thousands of minute, golden pinpoint sized dots. The edge of the dish is precisely banded round with elegant, intricate patterning, and the entire piece is further highlighted by stunning raised gilding, completing the piece in refined style. See photos for all the gorgeous detail. This dramatic Japanese dish is in excellent antique condition with just some minor wear to the gilding commensurate with age, and measures approximately 7 1/2" across. Marked on the underside with a particularly complex Satsuma giltmark that we have not yet translated. A rare and exceptional, museum quality Satsuma plate, and an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of fine Japanese antiques. Absolutely sublime.
