Kentucky derby Saratoga fans, competing equestrians or betting folks looking for a lucky charm! This being part of a riding outfit - still wear it as a lucky charm at the races. A gift collectible sporting gilt finish pin brooch with reverse painted horse intaglio first made popular as sporting jewelry in the mid 1850's on through to the early to mid 20th century.
When louped, the background shimmers so is it mop mother of pearl or a silvery paint? No bubbles seen at the dome of this essex crystal, which shows half moons grounding all along the edge to place it securely in the bezel.
So is it goofus glass or Essex crystal with no bubbles showing? Although, it is said that there is no goofus glass jewelry?
The reins show where the gold/yellow paint is off their lines a bit as seen under strong loupe. Admittedly, tis not the best portrait!
The gold gilt looks to be at least a rich 18K, reminiscent of that seen at turn of the 20th century, however the clasp says mid century era...
2.5" long X .75" wide.
The intaglio is 13mm across.
Very nice condition with minor gilt dulling in areas at the intact safety catch, where it should be, normal for age and the pin stem with clasp is very secure.
