Antique Chinese Kesi Woven Pictorial Tapestry, 19th C
An extra-large antique Chinese kesi /K'ossu tapestry, 19th century, very rare for its size, woven with polychrome silk & gold-wrapped threads. A smaller top rectangular is above a larger rectangular, both are depicting historical the battle scene between the Han Chinese and Mongolian, with soldiers on foot or on horseback, armed or carrying banners, Shields, and lanterns fighting in mountainous landscapes in front of a group of dignitaries and generals; each scene is framed with blue border & embellished with auspicious symbols, including foliage plants, bats, coins, bells, weapons, etc. The panel has been kept in a cedar trunk for years and it is in excellent condition, both front and back side are equally clear, shiny gold-thread ground, bright colors, no UV discoloration; clean, no stains, no frays or tears. It will look really nice when framed and displayed in a large living room, office or hotel lobby! To put it perspective, a very similar piece, most likely made from the same silk workshop, was sold in Dec 2010 on Christie’s, Paris. Measurements : Height 78" x Width 62.2 ( 198cm x 158cm) Ask if you have any questions or need more detailed pictures.
