"Nootka Feast Dish c.1850-60"
Nootka Ceremonial Bowl with bird head in the form of a canoe, c.1850-1860. 31 1/4" L, Interior width 7 7/8", Height at prowl 5 1/2", Height at bow 4 1/2". Very similar example in "Artificial Curiosities" an exposition of Native manufacturers collected on the three pacific voyages of Captain James Cook,R.N. The author is Adrienne L. Kaeppler; Figure 579 p.263 Figure 580. The examples that Captain James Cook collected at Nootka Sound (King George Sound)are very similar to this piece being sold. Excellent condition, showing evidence of fish oil use in the interior of the bowl. Price on request
