A Bronze Burmese Buddha from Shan State from the 15th Century. The Statues depicts Buddha subduing the demon Mara. The Buddha sits on a high-stepped throne tapering towards the top - a characteristic of Shan artists. The statues has a dedication on the back. The Shan also referred to as Tai people, originated from Yunnan in the Southern part of China. When Kublai Khan invaded Pagan in the 13th century, the Shan migrated behind them in Laos, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam and India. The Shan established the Ava and Pinya dynasties' and during this time conquered parts of west and south Burma.
