A pair of old Begodol acquired in Bali in 1969 probably 20-30 years old at that time or circa 1939.
Begodol or Dwarapala is the Balinese name for the gate guardian statues which were placed in Pura (temples) and Puri (royal homes) but currently can be found in kost houses in Bali. The statues are placed on the left and right side of the gate. Most balinese use the male-female Dwarapala which sometimes look alike and sometimes are different. They are the equivalent of the Chinese ying-yang, good-bad, positive-negative...etc. The Barong statue has a crack seen in the picture but remains a well-executed carving with fine details including the monkey on which the Dwarapala is stepping.
