TAPIS (Woman’s sarong)Lampung region, Sumatra. This sarong is patterned with ikat design of brown on black ground for the foundation cloth with small stripes of yellow and red. Embroidery using silk yarn of yellow, red and white is done on the four blue bands of the foundation cloth.. The motif looks very similar to the “Aso motifs” commonly used by the Ibans of Borneo but lacks the head which is often portrayed by the Ibans. The Aso which means dog actually looks more like the dragons of Chinese influence commonly seen in the Martavan urns exported from China to Borneo. Sequins are sown unto the whole piece of sarong to give it the shimmering look.Warp 134 cm, Weft 123 cm.
