Vladimir Pavlosky (1884-1944). Breezy Day, Back Shore.
Oil on canvas, 25 x 30 inches plus wide modern carved gilt frame, signed lower right. Pavlosky, born in the Russian Ukraine and descended from 3 previous generations of artists, came to America via Poland at the age of 20 to avoid military conscription. Settling in Boston, he was attracted by the colorful fishing communities of the North Shore and soon specialized in portraying the life of the Gloucester fishermen and scenes of Cape Ann. His entry in the 1923 Museum of Fine Arts Boston artists' competition placed Second to John Singer Sargent's First. Pavlosky outlined his philosophy of art in a contemporary newspaper interview: "The artist should be the happiest man alive, because art and the love of the beautiful are the finest gifts God has made us. The joy of catching the living world with a few strokes of the brush and a few colors is unending. All good painting should express the beauty of nature." He exhibited widely to great success, including shows at the Grace Horne Gallery, Vose Galleries, the Gallery-on-the-Moors, the Gloucester Society of Artists, the Gloucester Art Association and the North Shore Arts Association. While he most often painted "harbor" scenes with fishing boats at dock after their voyages, he seems to have been inspired to turn toward the open ocean for this work, capturing one of those memorable days of the brief Cape Ann summer, with a chop on the sea and pleasure sailors taking advantage of the breezes.
