| Watercolor and gouache on paper, 8.75 x 11.25 inches (sight) 14 x 16.25 frame. Signed/inscribed: "Deutsches Ordensspital zu Troppau, 1939 V. Planckh" at upper left (see enlargement 5). We are informed that at the time this watercolor was painted Planckh was staying at the hospital in Troppau where his wife was seriously ill. Born in Opova, Czech Silesia, Planckh moved with his family to Vienna, where he was raised and attended school. He studied art beginning about 1921 with Victor Shufinsky, Adolph Boehn and Berthold Loeffler. Early in the war, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. He died in the Nazi invasion of Greece at Athens in 1941. His work was featured in the major exhibition "Between the Wars: Austrian Artists 1918-1938" at the Leopold Museum in Vienna, 2007-2008. Planckh's "Calla Lillies" is a touching tribute to the importance of art in the midst of chaos and war. | ||
