This large tsubo is made in a classic, Chinese inspired form with a rich black background covered with oilspots from which silvery feathered tendrils trail down the surface of the pot...

This large, bold and classical Shino vase was made by Mino legend and veteran potter, Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947). Thrown out of traditional Mino mogusa clay, the throwing is both a blend of both casual and power. The form has areas of iron decoration under the beautiful and active white Shino glaze with lots of craters and crawling characteristic of great Shino pottery...

Wonderful and intricate ash glazed plate by Ningen Kokuho (Juyo Mukei Bunkazai) Shimaoka Tatsuzo. This large plate, hachi, is absolutely genuine and has all of the characteristics of Shimaoka, from clay, glaze and foot (kodai). This plate measures 12.25” X 2.25. The intricate design is first hand carved and then inlaid with white slip, which is later scrapped off to reveal the pattern. Once glazed, the hachi had Shimaoka's trademark iron brushwork applied to complete the design...

This rare Ido chawan is glazed in a milky ash, Hagi style glaze and was presumably made at the kiln of the Tenryu-ji temple (Kyoto-yaki) as it bares the seal of the kiln. The clay was made using ground roof tile, a piece brought back from China which is explained in the accompanying paperwork provided with the chawan...

Elegant Shino lugged vase by veteran potter, Ando Hidetake (b. 1938). Thrown and then paddled ovoid, this simple tea ceremony vase was made of Mino mogusa clay and once stiff, the foot was hand carved to produce a fitting oval foot to compliment the form. There are wispy traces of iron under the crisp white Shino glaze meant to insinuate grasses and stemmed flowers in an ethereal Momoyama ink painting inspired manner...

Rich, generous and timeless Aka-Raku chawan by veteran descendant of Honami Koetsu; Hon'ami Sokyu. This full and rounded form chawan is reminiscent of chawan from the edo period and was formed by hand molding, tebinari, the traditional manner in which Raku has been made for centuries. Lyrical and whimsical porcelain tsubo by Ishira Akira with overglaze enamels in red, yellow, green and Persian blue decorating the pure white surface. The surface is covered in red enamel, aka-e style creating a floral framework for the three rabbits articulated around the circumference of the pot with accents in other shades of enamel. The brushwork is easily seen and studied and shows a delft and exceedingly experienced hand.

This rich and substantial pot is by Mashiko potter Hyuga Munetoshi, a one time student of the Hamada kiln (?). Glazed in an exceedingly rich tessha/kaki iron glaze the pot has wax resisted decoration of flowers on either side of the pot. Intended for use as both a tsubo and mizusashi, this pot is a great example of modern Mingei influenced Mashiko pottery. The glaze is far more complex and rich than the photos convey and will not disappoint in person...
