Classical kohiki, powdered slip chawan by Ogawa Tetsuo (b.1937). Rich full form that makes for an exceptional chawan with a fine lip and excellent kodai with some crinkled clay peaking through the slip as if emerging from melting clay, the potters forever frozen in the base of the bowl where the pot was dipped in slip. Simple and complex at the same time.

Though subtle, there is a power to kohiki ware that is most time lost in simple illustrations...

Richly glazed complex form covered box that was pressed in to a hand mold and later finished off in temmoku and tessha accents. Obviously a well conceived form, this box most likely was made by either a student of Kawai Kanjiro or legendary Mashiko master, Hamada Shoji. The form, finish, lid and foot can easily lead one to a student of either, though the glaze quality leads me more to the Kawai school.

The box and lead measures approximately 3.76" tall, 5" long and 4.25" wide...

This modern chawan is by master innovator and Bizen potter, Kakurezaki Ryuichi. Apprenticed to Isezaki Jun, he learned the traditional methods of Bizen pottery and firing and has added so much more to his style and vision of clay...
