This medieval style chawan has a rich, fluid coating of glassy ash covering the entire face and most of the interior of the bowl with a vivid, green pool of ash as a centerpiece for the viewer/user. The ash is in a myriad of colors and travels well onto the foot where it culminates in a beautiful drip of green glass...

This highly animated and perfection in porcelain vase was made by Hokkaido native; Ono Kotaro. The deeply carved seiji vase is actually has a very pale yellow crazed glaze which collects on the ridges and further accentuates the cyclone like movement of this pot. Classical Iga vase by noted master Japanese potter; Kishimoto Kennin (b.1934). This vase, based on Momoyama and early Edo Iga archetypes, has varying hues of natural green ash about the top portion of the vase which also cascades down the side and forms wonderful bidoro rings around the mouth and shoulder. Though a thoroughly Iga pot, the clay body is actually wonderful Shigaraki clay with a healthy amount of feldspar inclusions...

Elegant Shino lugged vase by veteran potter, Ando Hidetake (b. 1938). Thrown and then paddled ovoid, this simple tea ceremony vase was made of Mino mogusa clay and once stiff, the foot was hand carved to produce a fitting oval foot to compliment the form. There are wispy traces of iron under the crisp white Shino glaze meant to insinuate grasses and stemmed flowers in an ethereal Momoyama ink painting inspired manner...

Though it is easy to spot some influences of his master, Arakawa Toyozo, this chawan is all Tsukigata Nahiko. Powerful, dramatic, enigmatic, there is a nearly unending number of descriptions that would still all fall short in describing this large Enbu-Shino chawan by Yamada Kazu. Enbu literally means "dancing fire" and it is that dancing fire that pushed the clay and glaze of this chawan to the very limit where the glaze turned to molten glass and began to flow like lava down the sides and into the interior of this pot...

A large, exhibition quality, bold and timeless Oni-Shino chawan by the master potter and legendary personality; Tsukigata Nahiko (1923-2006). This rare wood fired chawan has a wide variety of surface effects caused by the interplay of iron and Shino glazes and an intense fire with the face exhibiting a satiny iron face (tetsu-omote). The intentionally distorted shape fits the hand well and the lip, mikomi and kodai all act to balance out a truly inspired work by a potter of the highest level. Th...
