Shimizu Uichi (Un’ichi) was a pioneer in iron glazes and was best known for his various iron glazes and his kannyu crackle celadons. This vase is a great example of his complex iron glazes and shows a wonderful texture throughout with areas of a rich dark glaze around the mouth and flared neck with a sheen or iridescence about the body.
