This bold Momoyama Yashichida-Oribe style chawan is by undisputed master potter; Suzuki Goro. This chawan is decorated in a playful array of traditional Oribe designs worked in a very modern tone with shades of iron black, green and coral set on a creamy ground and glazed over in a clear glaze with the panel surrounded by charcoal black under a satin feldspathic glaze. With the decorative panel showcased on the front of the bowl, the seemingly undecorated obverse is in fact highlighted by circular halos where Suzuki’s fingers were when he dipped the chawan into the glaze. The posture of the bowl is very timeless and the kodai (foot) is well addressed and adds momentum and lift to the chawan. I should also mention the exceptional quality clay that adds volumes to this kodai and the chawan.
This chawan was made by arguably, one of the most famous living Japanese potters, Suzuki Goro. Suzuki is a master of a variety of Mino traditional styles including; Seto-Guro, Ki-Seto, Shino and Oribe to name but a few. Internationally know for his pottery and large scale works, including chairs constructed out of thrown pieces, his works are in museums and private collections around the world. Further, he is represented in galleries and publications in both the East and the West and is considered to be one of the most important living potters of the past 50 years.
This chawan is in perfect and unused condition and comes complete with its original signed high quality storage box. There is an exhibition sticker attached to the bottom of the box. This chawan measures 5.5” x 3.6” and is a wonderful example of Suzuki’s Yashichida-Oribe style. Suzuki Goro chawan start at 400,000 yen ($5000) presently and they are only likely to go up.
