KOBU-SHINO CHAWAN BY SAKAI KOBU
This Kobu- Shino chawan is by Sakai Kobu and is an exceptional example of his work. The nebula like decoration around the intentionally distorted tsu-tsu style chawan with undulating lip has a quality of three dimensions within the glaze. The rich and well controlled surface exhibits iron red, blue-grey, white and lavender tones within the glaze and it is obvious why Sakai is so highly regarded as a modern Mino potter by looking at this chawan. Sakai is also well know for his atypical asymmetrical kodai that compliments this form and because of how he addressed the foot, the bowl seems to hover just above the ground.

Sakai Kobu is a Toki Prefecture Living national treasure and is well now for his Kobu-Shino glaze that exudes a soft, ethereal appearance. Sakai is well exhibited and published throughout Japan and his creative addition to the Mino tradition of Shino is showcased in this chawan. Sakaiís development of his unique Kobu-Shino has played an important role in the contemporary Shino scene and his work is influencing the style of a whole new generation of potters.

12cm x 9.2cm

This chawan is in great unused condition and comes complete with its signed and sealed box. Currently, chawan by Sakai Kobu start at 280,000 yen and move up rather quickly. This chawan is a classical, intimate pot by one of the modern masters of contemporary Shino and its uniqueness can not be over stated. Simply put, this is a beautiful chawan!
