This large Haku En-Yu, white salt fired, chawan is by Kyoto master potter; Iwabuchi Shigeya (1925-1993). This soft white chawan has very subtle undertones of a pink blush over its surface and is covered with a series of crazed and crackled salt glaze deposited on the white slipped surface of the bowl. The generous bowl shape is reminiscent of older Hagi and even Korean chawan and is terminated with an exceptional bamboo node formed foot. The bowl is further decorated with three dark spots around the foot created when the bowl was dipped in the white slip, the fingers acted as a resist and the clay darkened when the salt adhered to the chawan.

Iwabuchi Shigaya was a versatile and masterful potter from Kyoto who embraced salt firing early on and was one of few potters firing in this method during the 60s and 70s. He was highly regarded, having studied with two Ningen Kokuho; Tomimoto Kenkichi and Kondo Yuzo. Iwabuchi also taught two potters who are very well known in the West; Kako Katsumi and Richard Milgrim. Iwabuchi exhibited widely and his works are extensively published.

This chawan is in great condition with its original signed box and measures 14 x 9cm. The chawan is clearly marked.
