Fine Oni-Shino chawan by Mino traditional potter, Murata Juko (b.1922). The Oni-Shino surface is a wonderful blend of fissured Shino with areas of rich iron about the exterior and covering most of the interior. The robust and inviting form has a very purposeful stance and displays well and feels great in the hand. The foot is boldly cut making maximum use of the texture of the mogusa clay.

Murata Juko studied with three of the 20th century's most important potters; Kato Kobei V, Kato Tokuro and Kato Hajime. Murata worked in a variety of Mino styles, but his work really excelled in the style of his unique Oni-Shino. Murata's Oni-Shino has a distinct and unique appearance, not to be confused with the Oni-Shino of Tsukigata Nahiko. Ostensible, it would seem that both Tsukigata and Murata pioneered their unique glazes independent of each other. The final picture is a page from a book on important Showa era chawan makers.

This chawan measures 5.2" x 3.5" and is in perfect condition and comes complete with its signed wood box and cloth. You can read more about Murata Juko on my blog, by searching for "Murata Juko"; albedo3studio.blogspot.com
