Large and robust thrown form by Tokoname legendary potter; Takeuchi Kimiaki (1948-2011). The full and round form was thrown out of a wonderful Tokoname clay and fired to maximize the fire color and slight ash deposits of Takeuchi's traditional anagama kiln. The surface has banding etched onto the surface that constantly acts as testament to the velocity and temperament of the fire. Though well known for his pottery with areas and splashes of applied ash glazes, it is this more subtle yakishime work that is very highly regarded and exhibited in retrospective shows (see the sixth illustration for a tsubo fired in the same manner from a retrospective show in 5/2012). Not only does this Tokoname tsubo have a great sense of volume and command of space, but it is exceptionally well thrown.

Takeuchi Kimiaki was one of the brilliant stand outs of Tokoname pottery along with his master Izaki Essei and fellow student, Osako Mikio. Together the three were dedicated to the revival and tradition of medieval Tokoname pottery and each created their own and unique additions. Takeuchi Kimiaki was widely exhibited and published throughout Japan and his works are also held in museums in the US and Europe.
This tsubo is in excellent condition, measures 11.25" x 11.5" and comes complete with its signed box. This tsubo was bought out of a juried exhibition in Japan by Dr. Fred Baekeland.
