Tall and imposing Hagi vase form made by kurinuki master, Kaneta Masanao. At over 14" tall, the vessel is impressive and commands its space much like an ancient medieval citadel. The pot is glazed in a Shiro-Hagi glaze that has significant areas of blushed pinkish hues over half of the form and vivid areas of intense white speckles adorning the absolute purity of the form. There are black highlights which define the form and process that peer out from underneath the glaze adding additional definition to the form and at the top of the form and on to one side there is a keyhole style opening cut out to complete the function of the form. In a static photo, volume can be hinted at, but it is only in person that the volume can be felt and fully appreciated. Measuring 14.25" x 9.25", the pot is in excellent condition and comes complete with its cloth and signed box.

Kaneta Masanao (b.1953) is the son of Kaneta Sanzaemon VII and current master as the eight generation, he majored in sculpture during his college days which can be clearly seen in his work and has become known worldwide as a master of the "carved out" (kurinuki) method which is how he creates his ceramic pieces. His pottery has been exhibited and collected in Japan and abroad and many of his pots have been illustrated in numerous catalogues and books. The last photo shows the Kaneta vase with a guinomi to give a sense of the scale of the piece.
