| This is an early oil sketch for a famous painting-HINDU SNAKE CHARMERS by Spanish painter Mariano Fortuny y Marsal--the sketch is 25 inches by 10.75 inches--oil painted on canvas with no condition problems--two large paintings were finished believed to be based on this sketch-one is 39 inches high and 65 inches wide and hangs in the Walters Museum in Baltimore, Md--the other is 23 inches by 49 inches is in St Petersburg in Russia at the Hermitage Museum--there are differences in composition from the sketch and painting at Walters-no figures in background in upper right hand quadrant-the snake and rabbit are handled differently--the seated figure carries a string instrument in the sketch and in the final painting he does not--both the final painting and the sketch are made from pieced canvas--do not have image or more data on painting in Hermitage so cannot compare-Fortuny was Spanish 1838--74-listed all over-sales records-and considered in the pantheon of Spanish artists of the 19th century -sketch is unsigned and unframed and was found in the US-canvas and pigments have requisite age--stretchers are old but may be not original-the two paintings in the Museums were completed in ca 1869 and were both commissioned by different private parties--this is a beautiful object fit for a serious collection | |||||||||||||
