This is a beautiful one of a kind, antique coin silver bright cut water pitcher. It was made in New York circa 1840. The question as to who made this piece is a little more difficult, as it is signed by a few different makers. It is signed Ball Tompkins & Black, successors to Marquand. Then its signed W. Forbes. So it was either a collaboration, or one was the retailer. The ewer was made in the bright cut acid etched style. With ornate foliage throughout. There is a cartouche with an inscription on the pitcher. The pitcher was apparently given as a gift to a lawyer or a guardian of these two children while they grew up (maybe their parents had passed away at a young age). The guardian's name was Shelden Smith Esq, and the children who he took care of (and gave him the gift) were Richard Donaldson, and Isabella Bockwell. The gift was given August 1846 in Newark. This would make an unbelievable addition to any antique coin silver collection. It comes from the hands of great makers (Marquand and Forbes), and would make an excellent wedding gift! Good luck bidding! MONOGRAM: "To Shelden Smith Esq in testimony of his faithful Guardianship of our Patrimony during our minority and in token of our respect. Newark, August 1846 - Isabella L.D. Bockwell Rich A. Donaldson" MEASUREMENTS: Height: 13.5" tall WEIGHT: 38 Troy oz!! HALLMARK: Ball Tompkins & Co, Successors to MARQUAND & CO, W. Forbes, NEW YORK, MAKERS MARK (see photo #2) CONDITION: In beautiful condition, really this piece is in great condition for its age. There is minimal surface scratching. This is an excellent piece! |
