The earliest reference is being played at the Florentine Intermedi of 1589. A Small instrument (nut to edge 16 inches) with 4,5 or 6 courses tunes in fourths. This 6 course instrument would have a 3rd between the 5th and 6th course. Probably Italian. Light floral design etched on the top.
