PERSIAN , TIFFANY STUFFING SPOON
Tiffany’s Persian pattern was introduced in 1872 and became inactive before 1904. The ornamentation is complex, with flowers and foliage interwoven in a network of arches and swirls, and with geometric shapes; it is based upon the interlocking scrollwork seen in the arts of the Islamic world. This early moresque style is used only for surface decoration. Both the front and the back of this stuffing spoon are completely covered with ornamentation. Decoration extends the entire length of the shank. The elaborate decoration and unique forms of pieces in this pattern probably made Persian expensive but very appealing to Tiffany’s affluent customers. Marks on the back of this stuffing spoon: incuse marks M Tiffany & Co. Pat 1872. Length 11 1/8” There is a single shaded style monogram. Please note the button on the back of this stuffing spoon. Today this piece is the popular size server for large bowls. Tiffany also offered a larger stuffing spoon but it is almost too large for the usual buffet bowls. When serving the button on the back prevents the spoon from slippping into the bowl. Excellent condition. Marks in the picture are shadows and the light fixture.
