This is one of the most fascinating and unique artifacts I have ever seen. The axe is 5 1/2" from top to bottom and the handle is 7". The handle has been broken off in antiquity at the end which is a plus for me because you can see the internal cross section of the wood. The haft is completely fossilized (84% calcium carbonate). The calcification of the wood is such that a species analysis could not be successfully performed on it, but it was determined that it was probably conifer. It was also determined that the conditions under which it was fossilized was probably submersion in a very lime-rich water. The only drawback to this piece is that provenance is unknown. I purchased it from Jeb Taylor, author of "Projectile Points of the High Plains". It has been examined by a forensic laboratory and thought to be from the Illinois area in origin. One of the most frustrating areas of collecting high-end artifacts is the nagging feeling of authenticity and it doesn't matter who the authenticator is when it's in this price range. Well, that feeling is put to rest with this mother of all no-brainers. The haft is petrified to the axe and it is obvious that the whole thing was made together and not some married concoction. This is simply one of the neatest artifacts you will ever see. It instantly overshadows any other piece and is the favorite of everyone who sees it. Make this the centerpiece of your collection now. Please see my youtube video at Due to a recent diagnosed major health problem, I have dropped the price of this piece and all my items by at least 50% to at or below the price I paid many years ago. Now is the time to pick up a great deal. My loss is your gain. This piece was $15,000.
