DESCRIPTION: An especially fine antique ivory carving of Guanyin (Kwan Yin), the Chinese deity of compassion and mercy. Standing on a carved lotus base, she pours soothing, healing waters from the vase in her left hand while her right is raised in a mudra position (Buddhist hand gesture). Her finely carved face radiates peace and serenity, and her hair and robes are delicately detailed. This exceptional and sensitive carving is in excellent condition with no chips or repairs. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of G. Jules Marder, past president of the Oriental Art Club of Chicago. DIMENSIONS: 9 ¾” high excluding wood stand (24.6 cm) x 3” diameter (7.6 cm).
CULTURAL BACKGROUND: Guanyin is one of the most venerated and well known of the Bodhisattvas, enlightened beings who have delayed entering paradise in order to help others attain enlightenment. Literally in the Chinese language, "Guanyin" means "observing the sounds," meaning she hears all the sounds from the world and listens to the prayers of her worshippers. This goddess comforts the troubled, the sick, the lost, and grants sons to the infertile. Her popularity has grown such through the centuries that she is also regarded as the protector of seafarers, farmers and travelers. |
