| DESCRIPTION: A fine Japanese ivory carving of a fierce looking, crouched oni with teeth barred in an wicked grin. Oni are creatures from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres or trolls. Popular characters in Japanese art, literature and theatre, they grew out of the religious traditions of Shintoism and Buddhism. This one holds a drum between his three-clawed hands while his feet are depicted with two claws each. A fine Tokyo School carving, it dates from the Meji Period (1868 – 1912) and is in very good condition with minor fine hairlines on the head and shoulder region; plaque on the base is unsigned. DIMENSIONS: 3 ¼” high (8.3 cm) x 2 ½” wide (6.4 cm). | |||||||||||||||
