DESCRIPTION: A dark green jade amulet in the form of a cicada with two wings, bulbous eyes and ribbed body. The ancient Chinese regarded cicadas as symbols of longevity, rebirth and immortality. In ancient times similar carvings were placed on the tongue of deceased persons before burial to ensure resurrection. This one has holes for stringing and can be worn as a pendant or used as a toggle. Shang style, but not authenticated. DIMENSIONS: 2 1/2" long (6.4 cm) x 1 1/4" wide (3.2 cm).
