Rare Back Issues of “Arts of Asia” Magazine: 1978 & 79
DESCRIPTION: Twelve rare back issues of “Arts of Asia” magazine, beginning with the January/February 1978 issue and running consecutively through the November/December 1979 issue. These rare issues feature such topics as Chinese tomb pottery, paintings, contemporary art, gardens, snuff bottles, cloisonné, textiles and costumes, ivory and wood carvings, the Imperial Palace, and ceramics. Japanese arts include netsuke, tansu, Buddhist paintings, prints, ivory, ceramics, lacquer, ojime, fans, and noh theatre. Also featured are articles on the arts of Thailand, Islam, and Korea. Interesting to see are articles about early collections (some now disbursed), prices realized at auctions during this period, and even the early advertisers. CONDITION: The pages of some issues are slightly warped due to exposure to moisture in the past, but there are no stuck pages and the illustrations and text are not damaged.

Generously illustrated with many color and black and white plates, these older issues are not even available from the magazine publisher’s archives. The “Arts of Asia” website describes the magazine in this way: “Arts of Asia, founded in 1970, is the world's leading fine magazine of Asian art. Published six times a year, it has the largest circulation of any Asian art magazine and is distributed to 90 countries. It has the support of numerous museums, cultural organizations, universities and schools throughout the world, as well as the major dealers and collectors, and students of art.” DIMENSIONS: Each issue is 9” x 12” (23 cm x 30.5 cm).
