Fine Chinese Gourd and Tortoise Shell Cricket Box
DESCRIPTION: An exceptional cricket box (or cage) with molded gourd body, bulbous ebony wood top, and a high, intricately carved tortoise shell cap. This outstanding box has all the characteristics that the experienced collector desires: good size, well defined mold impressions with complex design, invisible seams, and an intricately carved reticulated cap. The body of the gourd has a continuous landscape scene with mountains, twisting pine trees, pavilions and rock outcroppings. The domed tortoise shell cap has a central reticulated figure (moveable but interlocking) of the longevity god, surrounded by various carved Buddhist symbols. This is truly a fine collector’s piece in perfect condition and of a quality that is only rarely found; latter Qing Dynasty. DIMENSIONS: 7 ½” high (19 cm).
