Japanese Lacquer Hiramaki-e Box with Mons, Meji
DESCRIPTION: A spectacular Japanese box, beautifully lacquered with gold scrolling vines, delicate leaves and a repeating circular mon (family crest) against a black lacquer ground. This striking box is secured with hand etched brass fittings on the corners and matching rectangular handles on each end. On top of the slightly domed lid is a circular depiction of millet grain ready for harvest. The interior and bottom are finished with a glossy, mirror-like, black roiro ground in perfect condition. Probably commissioned by a wealthy Japanese family during the Meji Period (1868 – 1912), this dramatic large box is in virtually perfect condition with no scratches or losses. DIMENSIONS: 13 ¼” wide (33.5 cm) x 6 ¼” deep (15.8 cm) X 6” high (15 cm).
