This hand carved wooden mask of a Bearded man wearing a crown is an outstanding example of Mexican Folk Art from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. It might even date to an earlier period, based on the style of carving on this wonderful old weathered piece. It measures about 33 inches tall by 14 inches wide by 5 inches in depth. The condition is "as found". What this means is that the mask is structurally intact, but is covered over all with cracks and crevices from exposure to time and the elements. Some of it's original painted surfaces are intact, but some are not. It is missing one of the top rings of the crown and it appears as if it disappeared a long time ago from the overall weathering of the area. The turquoise blue of the crown seems to be an old overpainting of an even earlier shade of gold or greenish gold color. This mask could be described as a classic piece of Spanish Colonial Folk Art. From it's appearance, the level of wear and the outstanding craftsmanship of it's carving, it is a safe bet that this mask has seen it's share of festivals and religious ceremonies over the many years of it's existance. |
