19th C AMERICANA: Eagle & Flags ___E PLURIBUS UNUM

This original folk art embroidery or needlework of an eagle carrying American flags measures about 22 1/2 by 26 inches framed under glass.

It dates from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

This classic piece of Americana is in outstanding condition and of museum quality .

It is possibly of Chinese export origin, based on the colors and the style of stitches used. It is all hand worked in various shades of silk on a background of raw silk or another fabric.

A few, similar hand stitched pieces were brought back by US sailors from China between 18880-1920.

A somewhat similar example was an illustration on page 93 of the well illustrated book: The Stars and The Stripes, by Boleslaw Mastai, published in 1973 by Alfred Knopf.
