This pen & ink drawing is 9-3/4" x 17-3/4" or 17" x 25-1/4" with the frame. It is signed Walt Kuhn 28 on the right . Walt Kuhn is a well known artist and was one of the main organizers of the famous and controversial Armory Show of 1913 in New York, which introduced modern art to the U.S. on a grand scale. The gallery label on the back is from a Madison Avenue gallery in New York City from the early 1950's. It is interesting that recently a young man in New York told me that a friend of his mother was the model for this drawing. The drawing is in excellent condition with no visible tears or foxing. This is an opportunity to own a work by an important American artist at a reasonable price.

This is an original oil on board by Ben Benn. The board is 11-3/4" by 9", with frame 16-1/2 by 14". The scene depicts a large reddish bird in a tree, deep in a forest. It is signed and titled at the upper right on the back of the board, "Wood Interior/Ben Benn." I guarantee that the painting is by Benn, since I am selling the painting for a friend who bought it directly from Benn over 60 years ago. The condition is very good, no holes, although a light cleaning may be in order. There is a little of the canvas showing at the lower left of the painting, and it looks like the paint was never applied to the area.

The image of this ink drawing is about 6.5 x 9 inches, 12 x 15 inches with the frame. I have not found a signature, but the title "After the Ball" is handwritten lower right. The composition is excellent and the play of dark on the head, white on the torso and dark on the skirt indicate that a skilled artist created this drawing. In addition the body twists from the shoulders to the waist to the hips, knees, legs. The hair style and the clothing appear to date around 1910. The entire image conveys the relaxed exhaustion of a participant in a ball. The condition is good, no visible tears, just a shadow of a crease in the upper third area of the paper. The drawing would benefit from re-matting.

This ink drawing is 17 x 16 inches with the frame. Titled Horse Show on the back, there are myriad depictions of horses and stylized, mostly male nudes engaged in various activities. For lack of a better description I have designated the style surreal. It is signed lower right K Tonny, for Kristian Tonny, a listed Dutch artist 1907-1977. The paper on the back came off, and I have reserved the two labels, which contain important information. One label is from the de Young Museum in San Francisco with a title of Drawing No. 5 and the name Horse Show, which may have been the name of the Tonny Drawing or the exhibit at the de Young. It also lists the Marie Harriman Gallery as the owner. The other label is from the Marie Harriman Gallery, E. 57th St., New York City and also lists the title as Drawing No. 5. The gallery was open from 1930-1942, so the Tonny drawing probably dates to about that period or slightly earlier. The full name of Marie was Marie Norton Whitney Harriman, which combines three last names of very prominent art collecting families. Marie was the wife of Averell Harriman, who was a governor of New York State and an ambassador to the Soviet Union and Britain. The inventory of Marie's gallery formed the basis of Averell Harriman's art collection, much of which is now in the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. This Tonny drawing has an impressive provenance and is in good condition, no damage.

This watercolor painting is about 9" by 6", or 15" by 11-3/4" with the frame. The image depicts a classically draped mother with a child on her back. The faces are attractive and gentle, and the composition is spare but excellent. I have not found a signature on this piece, which is obviously high quality. I would estimate that the picture dates to about 1890-1910. The condition of the image is very good. The paper is taped to the mat on the back.

This etching by Piranesi is 15-1/2" by 10", 23" by 17-1/4" overall. The image is an elaborate commode decorated with horses, birds, putti, classical heads and fleurs de lys, topped by two urns with classical figures flanking a large clock with three full length figures. The background is fanciful and delicate wallpaper that contains scrolls, birds and flying mythological creatures. The etching is signed in the plate Cavalier Piranesi at the lower right. It appears to come from a book and is numbered 55 at the lower right. The etching is beautifully framed with an apparently hand carved frame and an eglomise black "mat" with a silver line next to the etching. Piranesi lived from 1720-1778. While this is certainly an original etching, evidenced by the plate impression on the paper, it is possible that this may be a posthumous print from the 19th century. The condition in the frame appears to be excellent, no foxing, tears or other apparent damage.

This landscape in oil measures 10" by 15-1/4" including the frame. The painting seems to be on a stiff material which is not canvas, wood or board. The painting itself is quite charming, with a large mountain in the center and an adobe type dwelling on the lower left. There is a small rainbow at the upper left. I do not see a signature on the front, but there is a label on the back that says Van Schaik. I have been unable to identify the artist. The painting dates to about the 1950's, and the condition is good. The painting is a little darker than it appears in the photos, because of the reflection from the flash. It could probably use a cleaning and there is a small flake in the paint at the center right near the frame.

The image of this old etching is 7=1/4" high by 10-1/8" wide. It is signed "Alt-Nuerenberg" A. Labaschin. It depicts a charming scene of an old chalet type building, a tower and an old covered bridge over a river with tall thin trees in the foreground. The print is in good condition, no tears, in a slightly yellowed mat. The frame is a simple black wood 1/2" wide with a gold stripe around the mat. The overall size of the frame is about 14-1/2" high by 17" wide. The print appears to date to approximately 1920-50.
