| This etching by Piranesi is 15-1/2" by 10", 23" by 17-1/4" overall. The image is an elaborate commode decorated with horses, birds, putti, classical heads and fleurs de lys, topped by two urns with classical figures flanking a large clock with three full length figures. The background is fanciful and delicate wallpaper that contains scrolls, birds and flying mythological creatures. The etching is signed in the plate Cavalier Piranesi at the lower right. It appears to come from a book and is numbered 55 at the lower right. The etching is beautifully framed with an apparently hand carved frame and an eglomise black "mat" with a silver line next to the etching. Piranesi lived from 1720-1778. While this is certainly an original etching, evidenced by the plate impression on the paper, it is possible that this may be a posthumous print from the 19th century. The condition in the frame appears to be excellent, no foxing, tears or other apparent damage. | ||
