Black Forest Style Antler Rack - Austrian WWII Vintage
Very nice mounted antler rack. This is a nice set of antlers typical to German deer. This is actually a rather good size pair measuring 8 inches from base of antler to the tip. The tag on the back indicates that the wood mount was made in Austria. Interestingly it specifically mentions Osterreich which was the name used for Austria from the beginning of German occupation to the end of WWII in 1945. This is helpful as it pinpoints the exact age of this set of antlers to 1945 at the latest. The wood itself is a wood particle composite which is something that was beginning to be used at the time. The antlers are affixed via a wire but someone added a screw to add stability. This is placed through a sinus hole so there is no damage to the rack and is largely unnoticeable but does leave a bulge in the back of the wood fiber (See photo). The finished mount is very attractive and would look good hanging in almost any style of decor. The last photo shows all three recently purchased. This listing is for the one on the right. Beautiful set priced fairly.
