German Made Dutch Officer Sword YZERHOUWER - Horster
Very interesting Horster officer sword. Made for a Dutch officer as "Eisenhower" has become the Dutch form YZERHOUWER. In either language it is a reference to the highest quality of steel being used. The blade on this example has no negatives I can find. Mirror bright throughout with no greying or oxidation. The Horster logo is beneath the langet. The scabbard has no dents and only minimal pain loss and crazing (See photos). The unfixed ring dates this either Weimar or Third Reich period. The early end of this spectrum is most likely as that is when the German military was smallest and German blade makers were dependent upon foreign contracts. Handsome lion head has both ruby eyes in place (As always not real rubies). Quillan swoops down into a second lion head. The original hanger is in place and looks great. The leather strap does have a few weak spots (Still very strong but definitely worn) and the brocade side shows one period repaired tear half way through the strap. Despite these points it still looks great. The clip shows nice oak leaf pattern and the spring works fine. There is also a swivel hook on the end for attachment to belt. Overall a gorgeous set with a good look to it. One wonders where this sword was and what it did from 1940-1945.
