British Sword Presented to Lt Cnl Ayrshire Rifles 1875
Lovely British/Scottish sword with brass scabbard etched presntation: Presented to Lieutenant Colonel John Dickie COMMANDING 2ND BATTALION AYRSHIRE RIFLE VOLUNTEERS BY PAST AND PRESENT MEMBERS OF NO1 COMPANY Kilmarnock 30th April 1875. Sword is in very good condition as per photos and the engraved presentation is just beautifully done. Handle is in perfect shape with triple twisted wire wrap fitting snugly over high quality fish skin covered grip. Blade does have a few nicks and some mild greying in areas. Some light scratching towards the end of the blade looks like someone lacking skills polished it but this is not disfiguring and someone confident in their abilities could probably run them out with some success. There is plenty of information on this unit but basically put this was one of the volunteer units that became popular as the ever present threat of French invasion loomed as well as the aftermath of the Crimean War. Many men from this unit later served in the Boer War which began in 1880. Kilmarnock is in Scotland. Lovely presentation sword with an interesting history.
