Civil War Officer Document Relating to Custer Massacre
This is the Civil War discharge certificate for James M Bell, Captain Company D Thirteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry. James Bell. The unit saw heavy action including Culpepper Court House, Mine Run Campaign, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Ream's Station. In the Battle of the Wilderness he was breveted a Captain for gallant services, and a Major for similar conduct at Ream's Station. Things really got interesting for Captain Bell, who stayed in the Cavalry, during the Indian Wars. Captain Bell, then in Company F of the 7th Cavalry, happened to be on leave for the Battle of Little Big Horn. Upon his return to the unit he was put in charge of the burial detail. The following year Major Marcus A Reno was court martialed for attempting to force himself on Captain Bell's wife and was busted in rank and lost two years pay. Captain Bell then saw service in the Nez Perce campaign against Chief Joseph. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel for "brilliant services against the Indians at Canon Creek, Montana". Bell stays with the cavalry through the Indian Wars. In April of 1901 he becomes Colonel of the Eigth Cavalry, and in September is promoted to Brigadier General. On December 10 he is in command of three regiments in a small action in the philipines. In todays market it is extremely difficult to find items with direct connection to Custer and the Battle of Little Big Horn; Here we even have the added bonus of an unseemly incident with Major Reno. What an interesting document! Comes with a stack of supporting paper research about an inch thick.
