This 6-3/4 inch tartan rule is in excellent condition except for missing its black label to identify the tartan - my best research picks Royal Stewart. It was made in Scotland in the last quarter of the 19th century (circa 1880), and its function would be to roll over blotted ink (rather than to measure); also it could be used to draw a short straight line. This is one solid piece of sycamore wood covered in the printed tartan paper.

Shaped like a dagger but made of sycamore wood printed with fern fronds and a few ivy leaves this paper knife was made in Scotland circa 1870. It measures 9-1/2 inches in length and is in excellent condition with only light wear.

The blunt edges and rounded tip suggest this would be more effective as a page turner rather than for opening letters - but page turners I've owned previously were larger. The fern fronds and ivy leaves printed on sycamore wood are clear and crisp. There is very light wear along the edges but otherwise the condition is excellent. Made in Scotland circa 1870 this piece measures 8-3/4 inches in length.
