| Culture: Greek. Date:8th Century B.C. Condition: Superb, intact, with original lid, very pretty green shades of patina. Mounted on a custom base stand. Provanenance: Ex: German private collection; EX: New York City art market. Measurements: 3.75 inches high, (9.5 cms), 3.5 inches wide, (9 cms). This pyxis is a beautiful example of the "sickle" type, so named because the shape of the vessel resembles that of a sickle. Linear incisions ornament the vessel's body. This type was most probably used to hold prefumes or smaller precious objects. This type most likely originated in Macedonia, although two such pyxides were found at Samos. Cf: Lot 111, Christies New York Antiquities Auction, 5 June 1998, also see no. 120 in Vokotopoulou, ed, Macedonians, The Northern Greeks.
