MESSAPIAN POTTERY TROZELLA, 400 - 300 BC
Culture: MESSAPIAN. Date: 400 - 300 BC. Origin: SOUTH ITALIAN. Material: POTTERY. Provenance: EX: PROMINENT EAST COAST PRIVATE COLLECTION. Condition: INTACT, EXCELLENT. Measurements: 10.5 INCHES HIGH, (26.5 CMS). With spreading foot, rounded body, and high rotelled handles. The decorations in brown lines over a smooth buff slip. Avery fine example of this desireble type of pottery. Trozella meaning literally "little wheels", as this vase has four little wheels. This type of pottery has a certain resemblence to the vases of geometric style that flourished towards the end of th eGreek dark ages. The Messapian originally were settled in the southern tip of Italy. Cf: Lot 438, Christie's South Kensington Antiquities Auction, 7 November 2001, also lot 129, Sotheby's New York Antiquities Auction, 5 December 2007.
