| Culture: Roman. Date: 1st Century A.D. Material: Bronze. Condition: Intact, with dark green patina. Provenance: Ex: Prominent U.S. East Coast collection, Ex: European art market. Measurements: 7.9 inches tall (20 cms). The piriform body cast with thick walls. The disk base with concentric circles. The handle separately cast, double-reeded with two bird heads. The upper handle decorated with three figures. The terminal in the form of a mask of Pan or Dionysos. The neck finely decorated with a frieze of six pelikens in different shapes, in between plant leaves. A very rare type of oinochoe. Cf: Lot 127, Christie's New York Antiquities Auction, 7 December 2006 (est. $10,000 - $15,000, sold for $26,400, and ours is in a much better quality). | ||
