ARCHAIC-PHOENICIAN FIGURE OF A SPHINX, 6TH-5TH CENT BC
Culture: Archaic-Phoenician. Date: 6th - 5th Century B.C. Material: Marble. Condition: Intact, missing head. Provenance: Ex: U.S. private collection; Ex: New York art market. Measurements: 5.25 inches high (13.4 cms). The mythical creature with a lion's body, bird's wings, and a human head now missing, sits upright on a rectangular base with its wings spread backwards, the paws on the forelegs with three large tows as well as the hind legs. Its upright seated pose is similar to archaic Greek sphinxes set atop funerary stelae, than to the more usual recumbent position of Egyptian sphinxes. Cf: Cat. no. 228, Greek Sculpture: The Archaic Period, J. Boardmann, also for another similarly posed sphinx fashioned into an incense burner from Cyprus, now in the Louvre, Paris, inv. MNB 334, see also Sabatino Moscati, The Phoenicians, p. 381, for a mould and stamp depicting a hunt scene with a sphinx in similar pose. An extremely rare figure.
