EGYPTIAN SANDSTONE RELIEF OF AMUN-RE, 300 BC
Culture: Egyptian. Date: 300 BC.(Ptolemaic). Material: Sandstone. Condition: Intact. Provenance: Ex. private collection from the 1960,s. Measurements: 10 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches (26.5 x 28.5 cms). The head of the god appears on the lower left of the reief with two columns of heiroglyphs appear on the upper right. Below the heiroglyphs is the terminal of a was-sceptor, undoubtedly held by another divine figure which is no longer preserved. It is probable that the original composition featured Amun-Re and his divine companion as the recipients of giftes presented by donors shown on the left part of the relief. Amun was the supreme god of the Egyptian pantheon. He is often shown as a pharoah wearing an elaborate crown with two tall plumes which symbolize the "two lands" of Upper and Lower Egypt. Cf: for a related relief of Amun-Re, see Robert S. Bianchi et al, Cleopatra's Egypt: Age of teh Ptolemies (New York, 1988), no. 20, pp. 109-111.
