EGYPTIAN FAIENCE MASTERWORK GROUP, 305-30 BC
Culture: Egyptian. Date: 305 - 30 B.C. Material: Faience made from ground quartz rather than from clay. Condition: Intact, small hole repair. Provenance: Ex: New York private collection; Farag El-Shaer, antiquity dealer, lic. no. 116, Cairo, Egypt, 1964. Measurements: 1 3/4 in. H. (4.5 cm.). This work features a monkey standing on its hind legs and its hands hugging a flask that may have been a cosmetic or oil container. The monkey's face is turned sharply to the left, both arms are resting on the flask. Monkeys amused the ancient Egyptians, who often kept them as pets, and throughout Egyptian history, they were enjoyed for their playful and whimsical behavior. Because they had to be imported over great distances at considerable expense, the possession of monkeys indicated the owner's wealth and social status This small scale monkey in comparison to the flask, reveals excellent details. An exceedingly rare faience work from Ptolemaic Egypt. The closest parallel to this exceptional work is cat. 79, p.168, Eternal Egypt, Masterworks of Ancient Art From The British Museum (EA 48014, Monkey Riding a Horse), Edna Russman. Another monkey seated on an ovoid base in the Brooklyn museum ( Accession No. 48.181).
