| This mint quality piece is a sweet little silver cup that dates circa late 4th century B.C. This attractive piece was hand forged and hammered from one solid silver sheet, and was formed into its present form. This piece is approximately 2.2 inches high and 3.2 inches in diameter, and is within the average range of size for a vessel of this type. (For the type see "Greek and Roman Gold and Silver Plate" by D.E. Strong, London, 1966, p.78.) This type of cup is known as a "kalyx" type cup, which has a rounded lower body, elongated neck, and flared lip. This piece has a beautiful light gray patina, and there is some minute bronze deposits seen on and below the upper rim. There is also some minute graffiti seen on the neck that is in the form of two letters. (See close up photo.) These letters may denote the maker of the cup and/or its owner. The small letters may also denote a location on the vessel, where the artist wanted to mark as a centering point for possible engraving. This piece is also very analogous to the silver vessels that were found in the tomb of Philip II. (See N. Yalouris, "The Search for Alexander", New York, 1980, no. 164.) This piece is an exceptional example for the type, and has a superb "as found" patina. Ex: Steve Rubinger collection, Los Angeles. Ex: Christie's Antiquities, New York, May 1997, no. 143. ($4,000.00-$6,000.00 estimates.) Ex: Private New York collection. I certify that this piece is authentic as to date, culture, and condition: | |||||||||||
