| This Greek bronze applique is two horses that are seen running side by side, and are probably part of a Greek chariot, otherwise known as a biga. This piece dates circa 4th century B.C. and was probably an applique for a bronze vessel or armour, such as a helmet. This piece is approximately 1.5 inches long by 1.4 inches high and may also have been part of a scene. The design of this piece is very similar to the gold staters that were minted by Philip II, as the reverse of these coins show a chariot being pulled by two horses. (See attached photo.) The two horses seen harnessed together in this way was known by the Greeks as "Synoris". This piece shows the point when the horse are beginning to run, as their tails are down and are not flowing behind, and this pose shows the power of the horses. This piece also has minute traces of silver gilt and spotty mineral deposits. This piece has a nice dark green patina and there is iron oxide on the back side that indicates that this piece was attached to another object. This piece is mounted to a custom clear plexiglas base with clay and can be easily removed. Ex: Bonhams Antiquities, London. Ex: Private English collection. I certify that this piece is authentic as to date, culture, and condition: | ||
